What makes us wrong

The league or FIBA announces the award calendar slipping to 2027, or the EuroLeague integration track collapses the launch timetable.

The league has hit every public milestone on this project: exploration announced March 2025, team-engagement process December 2025, Silver in Berlin January 2026 ('very much on schedule'), final bids due end of June 2026. Over 20 groups bid and several offered $1B or more. Silver's own words: franchises 'presumably' awarded in the fall. 65% rests on that construction. Bidders who offered $1B create pressure to convert, and the October 2027 launch date requires the awards to land first. The discount: 'presumably' is a hedge, the EuroLeague integration talks are unresolved, and awarding 12 permanent franchises at once is a harder announcement than awarding a few. This is the second half of the NBA's growth map. The domestic half (32 teams by vote) is already on the board; this is the European half.
